Guro Style African Carved Wood Horned Antelope Mask with Figure, Côte d’Ivoire
Striking Guro-style African carved wood mask featuring an elongated zoomorphic face, dramatically curved antelope-like horns, and an unusual sculptural figure rising prominently above the mask.
Hand carved from wood, the mask displays a richly aged polychrome surface in ochre, black, cream, red, and traces of blue. The expressive face incorporates projecting rounded eyes, sharply defined brows, a long curved central nose, geometric projecting ears, an open mouth, and deeply incised linear decoration along the chin.
The elaborate crest is particularly distinctive. Multiple sweeping horns frame a fully carved human-form figure positioned above the head, giving the mask an imposing three-dimensional silhouette when viewed from the front or side. A broad pierced wooden structure extends behind the face and contributes additional sculptural depth.
The design relates visually to Guro horned and zoomorphic mask traditions associated with Côte d’Ivoire. A documented Guro Zamble mask in the Brooklyn Museum collection is similarly carved in wood with pigment and is described by the museum as having a long antelope form, horns, an open mouth, and a curved wedge-shaped nose.
The combination of carved wood, expressive animal imagery, bold geometric ornament, vivid pigmentation, and figural crest gives this piece a commanding presence as African decorative art.
The surface exhibits substantial variations in color and patina, along with rubbing, pigment loss, abrasions, small losses, and other signs of age and handling visible in the photographs. These characteristics contribute to the sculptural character of the piece.
Guro mask from the Ivory Coast of Africa are traditionally used in ceremonies to represent spirits or significant qualities like wisdom and strength. These masks are also associated with the spirit world, honoring ancestors and celebrating important events.
