A set of six antique Liegeoise dining chairs, including one armchair, hand carved in solid oak and upholstered in hand stitched needlepoint. A deep, rich patina warms the oak, and each seat displays a lush floral bouquet worked in soft pinks, creams and greens on a rose ground, finished with a border of brass nailheads. The tall backs rise to a carved shell crest surrounded by acanthus scrolls, framing a pierced urn shaped splat that ends in lattice carving at its base. Shaped aprons centered by shells rest on graceful cabriole legs carved with acanthus at the knees and finished with hoof feet.
The armchair adds scrolled, contoured armrests carved with acanthus and its own distinctive needlepoint bouquet. Subtle variations in the carved splats and tapestry patterns reveal the hand of the individual artisan, and frames joined with mortise and tenon joinery give the set lasting strength.
Liège held a special place in European furniture making. Its master carvers worked the dense local oak with remarkable depth and fluency, translating the curves and rocaille ornament of Louis XV France into a regional style admired for its sculptural richness. Workshops in and around the city carried that tradition well into the 20th century, keeping alive the skills that made Liegeoise carving renowned.
Gathered around a walnut or oak farm table, the set brings warmth and old world character to a formal dining room, while the rose needlepoint adds softness to a light, airy kitchen or breakfast room. The armchair also stands beautifully on its own at a desk or beside a fireplace.
