The large graphic sheet with the impressive scene of the Nativity was created by the German engraver Johann Elias Haid based on the famous painting by the Dutch Baroque painter Adriaen van der Werff.
The graphic was created around 1770 using the mezzotint or black manner technique, which allows for exceptionally subtle transitions between deep shadows and brightly lit figures. The composition is dominated by the newborn Jesus, whose body becomes the main source of light for the entire scene. The Virgin Mary bends over to the child, while the surrounding shepherds and other figures emerge from the dark space of the stable. In the upper part, two angels float in a ray of heavenly light. The scene stands out for its dramatic chiaroscuro, sensitive treatment of the figures and impressive spiritual atmosphere. The graphic was inspired by the painting of the Nativity from 1706, which Adriaen van der Werff created for Johann Wilhelm, Elector of the Palatinate. The painting was originally located in the famous Electoral Gallery in Düsseldorf and today belongs to the collections of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. The Latin and French title of the work, information about the author of the original and the engraver, the heraldic emblem and information about the Düsseldorf gallery are preserved on the lower edge of the graphic sheet. The graphic is adjusted under glass in a light passe-partout and set in a wide veneered frame with a distinctive wood grain. The paper and frame bear natural small traces of age corresponding to the historical character of the work. Representative antique graphic suitable for a classic interior, a castle room, a study or a collection of old masters.
