Lithograph on paper, published by Gihaut Frères in 1837. Signed in the plate. An important original lithograph by Denis Auguste Marie Raffet, illustrating one of the decisive moments during the Siege of Constantine in October 1837, when French assault troops advanced through the breached city walls under intense enemy fire. The composition records the dramatic arrival of the second assault column as the attacking forces press forward across shattered fortifications, while the mortally wounded Captain Potier, supported by Chef d'Escadron Richepanse, becomes the poignant focal point of the scene. This composition forms part of Raffet's celebrated series devoted to the French conquest of Algeria, among the most significant visual records of the colonial campaigns undertaken during the July Monarchy. Rather than glorifying combat alone, Raffet emphasises the courage, sacrifice, and human cost of military operations, qualities that distinguish his work from the more conventional battle imagery of the period. Condition: Good overall condition with a well-preserved impression displaying fine tonal gradation and crisp detail. The sheet exhibits age-related toning, scattered foxing, and light handling wear, primarily within the margins, consistent with its age. The printed image remains clear and visually compelling. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
