Pencil on paper. Not signed. Stamp of the artist's studio. A finely executed preparatory drawing by the distinguished French Academic painter Isidore Pils, comprising two studies associated with a projected decorative programme for Saint Mark's Basilica, Venice. The principal study depicts a standing figure of Christ, identified by the cruciform halo and rendered in a solemn, hieratic pose with one arm extended in benediction. Beside Him appears a secondary full-length study of a saint or ecclesiastical figure dressed in liturgical vestments, accompanied by annotations indicating colour and decorative details. Executed with clarity and restraint, the sheet demonstrates Pils' methodical approach to monumental religious design. The drawing reflects the artist's close engagement with the visual language of Byzantine and early Christian art. The elongated proportions, simplified drapery, frontal presentation, and carefully constructed contours reveal a conscious adaptation of the mosaic tradition associated with San Marco, Venice, while remaining firmly grounded in the disciplined draughtsmanship of the French Academic School. Rather than pursuing painterly effects, Pils concentrates on the underlying structure and iconographic accuracy of the figures, establishing the essential forms that would guide the execution of a larger decorative project. Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1838 and later Professor at the École des Beaux-Arts, Isidore Pils enjoyed an eminent career as one of France's foremost painters of history, religion, and military subjects. His extensive studies of Italian monuments and early Christian art informed numerous ecclesiastical commissions, where archaeological fidelity was combined with academic precision. Drawings such as the present sheet reveal the intellectual foundations of his practice, documenting the careful transition from initial concept to finished monumental decoration. The annotations identifying colours and ornamental features further confirm the drawing's practical function within the artist's studio. Such working sheets provide valuable evidence of the design process behind nineteenth-century ecclesiastical commissions, preserving decisions concerning iconography, costume, and compositional balance before their final execution. Good overall condition with light age-related toning, scattered foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with age. The graphite remains fresh and clearly legible, with visible preparatory annotations throughout. The sheet bears the Atelier Pils studio stamp at the lower right, confirming its origin from the artist's workshop. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
