An exceptional vintage gelatin silver press photograph by the celebrated american music photographer jim marshall, depicting jimi hendrix performing at the legendary monterey international pop festival in june 1967, while acclaimed filmmaker d. A. Pennebaker films the performance that would become one of the defining moments of the documentary monterey pop (1968). Photographed from behind the stage, marshall's composition captures hendrix in profile at the microphone, his guitar strap visible across his back, while pennebaker appears at right operating his 16mm camera. The image documents the convergence of two towering figures in twentieth-century cultural history: hendrix, whose incendiary monterey performance established him as an international rock icon, and pennebaker, whose cinéma vérité filmmaking immortalized the festival for generations. The lower margin carries the printed caption: "jimi hendrix / d. A. Pennebaker – monterey pop festival – photo: jim marshall," together with the release notation "an are you experienced? ltd / pennebaker associates, inc. Release" and the handwritten production title "jimi plays monterey." the photograph was therefore produced as an official publicity still in connection with the release and promotion of pennebaker's acclaimed concert film.
