A beautifully expressive vintage studio pottery vase distinguished by its sculptural proportions and richly layered, experimental glaze.
The generously rounded body rises to a defined shoulder with a pronounced raised ridge, supporting a narrower cylindrical neck. The form has an organic, architectural quality reminiscent of Japanese studio pottery traditions, particularly the earthy character and expressive surfaces associated with Bizen and Shigaraki ceramics.
The glaze is particularly compelling. Predominantly deep red, its surface reveals layers of russet, copper, and reddish-brown intermingled with olive and teal-green variations. Fine pitting, subtle crackling, and areas of reflective sheen create a richly textured surface that changes character with the light.
The underside is dark charcoal-gray, with an incised signature or monogram that appears to read "RR" or possibly "RB." The artist has not been conclusively identified, and the precise firing technique remains undetermined.
A substantial and distinctive example of studio pottery, equally compelling as a standalone sculptural object or as part of a collection of 20th-century ceramics.
