Large patinated bronze sculpture, known by the Italian title Pescatorello, executed according to the celebrated model of the Neapolitan sculptor Giovanni Varlese (1888–1922). The work represents a young barefoot fisherman, wearing a wide straw hat and affectionately holding a freshly caught fish against his chest. The figure stands on a naturalistic base, modeled as rocky terrain, decorated with fish and a small fishing basket. The sculpture stands out for the serene expressiveness of the face, the anatomical treatment of the figure, and the careful reproduction of the fish scales, the straw of the hat, the fabric, and the elements present on the base. It has a dark brown patina with golden reflections and areas naturally lightened by handling. A characteristic model of the Neapolitan sculptural school of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, dedicated to the realistic representation of childhood and popular life. See less
