This charming pair of vintage boxwood carvings depicts guardian lions, or Foo Dogs, in a playful, recumbent posture. Each lion is finely carved with detailed curly manes, expressive open-mouthed faces with visible teeth, and muscular bodies with incised fur patterns along the spine and haunches. One lion rests its paw upon a small object, while the other is depicted in a relaxed pose. The wood exhibits a rich, warm amber-brown tone with a smooth, polished surface and natural grain patterns. In traditional culture, these figures are symbols of protection and good fortune. This pair makes a delightful addition to a collection of wood carvings or Asian decorative arts.
