A handsome French commode à vantaux et tiroirs, having a rectangular case surmounted by an inset slab of black Belgian marble. The façade is arranged with two paneled doors decorated with diamond-shaped reserves, opening to one drawer and two false drawers, creating a balanced and refined architectural composition.
The drawer incorporates an unusual and cleverly conceived mechanism: when removed, it exposes a hinged flap that opens to reveal a deep concealed compartment within the case. This ingenious feature is an especially interesting aspect of the piece and reflects the sophisticated cabinetmaking associated with fine Parisian furniture.
The commode is distinguished by its rich mahogany veneer accented with ebony and satinwood, restrained classical proportions, inset black Belgian marble, and serrures à trèfle (four-leaf-clover locks). The combination of contrasting woods, geometric diamond-shaped reserves, and black marble gives the piece a sophisticated and highly architectural character.
The use of ebony and satinwood is particularly noteworthy in considering an attribution to Bernard Molitor (1755–1833), whose furniture is known for the refined combination of mahogany with contrasting exotic woods and restrained Neoclassical ornament. The present commode shares elements of this vocabulary, particularly in its use of contrasting veneers, geometric decoration, and finely executed hardware.
The unusual combination of vantaux, drawer, false drawers, and concealed compartment gives the piece the character of a specialized commode à vantaux et tiroirs, rather than a conventional commode.
The construction, materials, hardware, proportions, and overall decorative vocabulary are consistent with French furniture of the Restoration /early Charles X period, circa 1820–1830, while retaining the refined Neoclassical tradition established during the earlier Directoire, Consulat, and Empire periods.
The piece is attributed to Bernard Molitor, one of the most distinguished Parisian ébénistes of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
