An elegant antique French centerpiece basket from the Faïencerie de Toul-Bellevue, bearing the impressed “FAÏENCERIE DE TOUL J.A.” maker’s mark associated with Jules Aubry.
Its low oval silhouette combines intricate pierced sides with molded ribbon-and-bow details, foliate ornament, and oval medallions depicting blue sailboat scenes. The soft blue and ivory palette lends a gentle decorative presence, while the openwork creates depth and delicate shadows.
The form closely resembles a polychrome Toul J.A. basket photographed in the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Toul, providing a compelling visual connection to the manufactory’s decorative production. This example features a different color treatment and decoration.
A distinctive accent for a dining table, sideboard, or library console, with the sculptural detail and restrained palette suited to French country, traditional, and grandmillennial interiors.
Designer Notes
Display as a standalone centerpiece on dark wood to emphasize the pierced silhouette, or pair with antique silver, linen, and blue-and-white ceramics for a layered tablescape. Its modest height makes it especially useful where an unobstructed sightline matters.
Maker & Historical Context
Toul-Bellevue was a historic French ceramics manufactory in Lorraine. The impressed J.A. mark is associated with Jules Aubry’s direction of the factory during the second half of the nineteenth century. This piece is best described as late nineteenth century; its exact production year is unconfirmed.
Provenance
Acquired from a private estate collection. An old handwritten paper label remains attached to the underside and records a previous assessment of the piece’s age. The label is undated and does not identify a previous owner.

Minor localized surface wear and small losses to the decorative finish are visible on some raised details. Much of the darker shading in the photographs results from shadows cast by the pierced construction. Please review the detailed photographs. less
