A rare and wonderfully inventive piece of early 20th-century Austrian craftsmanship, this circa 1915 cold-painted bronze horse document clip combines exceptional sculptural detail with an ingenious practical function.
At the center is a beautifully modeled horse’s head, rendered in cold-painted bronze with remarkable character and dimension. The expressive eyes, finely textured mane, alert ears, and carefully articulated features give the horse a strikingly lifelike presence. The original aged surface and variations in the painted finish add to the character expected of an antique piece of this period.
More than simply a decorative sculpture, the horse conceals a clever mechanical function. The head is hinged, allowing it to lift at the mouth and apply pressure against the substantial molded wooden plaque beneath. Originally intended to secure papers and documents, it transforms an everyday desk accessory into a distinctive piece of equestrian sculpture. The richly toned wood plaque provides a handsome contrast to the bronze and gives the piece considerable visual presence on a desk, library table, or study. A mounting hook on the reverse also allows it to be displayed on a wall, where its sculptural form can be appreciated as an unusual piece of equestrian décor.
Substantial in both size and weight, the piece measures approximately 9.75 inches deep, 6.25 inches wide, and 4 inches high, and weighs just over 2 pounds. Good antique condition some small areas of paint loss and aged surface. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Dating to approximately 1915, this is an uncommon survivor from the golden age of Austrian cold-painted bronze—part sculpture, part functional desk accessory, and an especially appealing piece for collectors of equestrian antiques, sporting décor, Austrian bronzes, or distinctive gentleman’s desk objects. Its unusual combination of scale, craftsmanship, function, and subject matter makes it a particularly rare and memorable antique.
