The copper engraving "Shepherd & Shepherdess" depicts an intimate scene featuring a shepherd and a shepherdess set within a romantic garden landscape complete with a fountain and statues. The original composition is by the Dutch painter Eglon van der Neer (1634–1703), whose works were held in prominent European collections. The engraving bears the inscription "Pinakothek," referring to the Old Pinakothek in Munich, where the original painting is housed. The print is executed with exceptional precision, emphasizing subtle shading and the intricate details of drapery and natural elements. It is a fine example of 19th-century printmaking, a period when reproductive engravings of works by great masters were popular among a wider circle of art enthusiasts.
