A tall bottle-form vase designed by Jerzy Słuczan-Orkusz for the Tarnowiec glassworks in southern Poland. In the Polish trade the model is known by its applied ornaments - "motylki", little butterflies.
The body tapers from a wide foot to a long, narrow cylindrical neck. The colour is not even: it stands almost black at the lip, opens to a deep ruby through the neck, and thins steadily down the body until the foot is a pale rose that lets the light straight through. Two ornaments of colourless glass are applied at the shoulder, each trailed on hot and folded back into a double loop, so they sit proud of the wall like a pair of wings. They are decorative, not handles - the vase is not meant to be lifted by them.
Jerzy Słuczan-Orkusz (1924-2002) took his diploma in ceramics and glass at the Wrocław academy in 1953 and was chief designer at the Tarnowiec glassworks. His glass is held by the National Museums in Kraków, Warsaw and Wrocław, and was the subject of the 2019 monograph "W pogoni za kolorem. Szkła Jerzego Słuczan-Orkusza" by Barbara Banaś and Aleksandra Skorek, published by the National Museum in Wrocław. This piece has an attribution mark,
