Scandinavian bookcase in elm from the 1940s and 1950s, characterized by an open structure with three shelves and slightly slanted sides, giving the piece a softer profile compared to the rigorous geometry of subsequent Nordic modernism. The base and top are defined by rounded, slightly protruding edges, while the short, tapered, outwardly slanted legs visually continue the line of the sides. The design dates to a particularly interesting phase of Scandinavian production, between tradition and the progressive emergence of modernism. In the 1940s and early 1950s, forms and techniques associated with traditional cabinetmaking continued to coexist with an increasing simplification of structures: measured proportions, minimal decoration, and a focus on the expressive qualities of wood anticipated the language that would characterize postwar Nordic design.
