Grounded — “be grounded, as roots do, in order to grow, and never forget where you come from.”
this piece belongs to a collection inspired by a yoga practice — by the sensation of rooting, of spreading your roots deep into the ground and illuminating the darkness of grounding, so that you may feel whole and safe.
the collection also explores the mysterious attraction between people. When you make space for another person and their roots begin to reach toward yours in a luminous, almost inexplicable way, the unfamiliar becomes familiar, the impossible becomes possible, and the relationship finds the form it was always seeking.
designed and handcrafted by frankie cesare together with his specialized team for f+m fos in greece, this sculptural chandelier is created entirely by hand from copper wire. Each individual branch consists of more than 500 strands of wire, twisted and divided by hand to recreate the organic complexity of natural roots.
what appears organic and almost spontaneous is, in fact, the result of an extraordinarily demanding process. In the 15-branch composition, thousands of individual strands of copper wire pass repeatedly through human hands. They are gathered, twisted, separated, redirected and shaped one by one, gradually transforming an industrial material into something that appears to have grown rather than been manufactured.
there are no moulds capable of creating these branches and no mechanical process determining their final form. The work develops slowly, branch by branch, through weeks of highly specialized handwork. It is a process in which repetition becomes craftsmanship: hundreds of individual gestures within every branch, thousands within the complete chandelier. The apparent freedom of the finished form conceals an exceptional density of human labour.
light is not simply added to the sculpture; it becomes part of its structure. Distributed throughout the branches, multiple points of warm light emerge from within the mass of copper, revealing the depth, irregularity and shadows created by the thousands of intertwined strands. As the viewpoint changes, so does the relationship between metal, light and shadow.
the copper structure is finished with electrostatic coating and individually applied decorative patinas using traditional gilding powders. The version shown features a deep brown finish with gold and copper highlights. Alternative finishes are available at no additional cost, including silver with black tips or plain silver, ecru with gold tips, and copper with dark brown tips.
the patina is not conceived as a uniform surface treatment. It is applied by hand to emphasize selected areas of the branches, allowing gold and copper to appear gradually against the darker surface. This deliberate irregularity reinforces the impression of something shaped by time and nature rather than by industrial repetition.
the highly flexible branches can be individually shaped and spread after installation, allowing the overall diameter and silhouette of the chandelier to be adapted to the space.
this flexibility also means that the work does not have one rigid, predetermined silhouette. Its branches can interact with one another, open outward or become more contained, allowing the final composition to respond to the architecture around it. In this sense, the installation becomes the final act of the making process. Signed by maker, imprinted by maker,
