Everything hangs on brass rods hooked over the ladder rungs, so you can move each shelf or cabinet up or down to suit books, records, a desk or display. A diagonal brace at the foot of each ladder keeps the frame rigid, and each ladder stands on a small round foot.

the fall-front desk cabinet has a carved wooden handle with a working lock and key above it. The flap drops down on a brass piano hinge and is held level by brass stays on both sides, which gives you a writing surface. The second cabinet has two sliding doors, each with a reeded vertical pull. Behind them is an adjustable glass shelf on pins.

one shelf has a raised lip along its front edge and notches cut into its sides. You can hang it at an angle to show off books, records or magazines, or fit it flat as an ordinary shelf.

inside each cabinet there's a metal label that reads: "staples / ladderax / unit furniture / pat. Nos 846454 & 37748/62 / made by staples & co. Ltd. / cricklewood · london · n.w.2."
