The rhinoceros by Dimitri Omersa is one of the most iconic leather animal sculptures from the British manufacturer Omersa. Since 1927, the company has been handcrafting leather animal figures, designed to function as seating, sculptures, and decorative furniture.

Omersa's leather animals were sold early on through the London department store Liberty and became a staple of British interiors. from the mid-1960s to the late 1980s, they were also sold exclusively through Abercrombie & Fitch—at a time when the company was still known as a long-established American retailer of high-quality travel, sporting, and leisure goods.

with its compact proportions and clearly sculpted form, the rhinoceros offered here possesses a striking sculptural presence. The hand-worked leather surface, the visible seams, and the patina developed over decades attest to the object's age and craftsmanship.

This particular example was produced around 1960–1970. There is a very faint embossed mark on the inside of one ear, which is presumably the "Made in England" marking.

Condition Report

The rhinoceros is in good, authentic condition overall, showing signs of age and use. The leather exhibits a pronounced patina developed over decades, giving the object its characteristic and distinctive appearance. In some areas, the leather surface shows age-related craquelure, including a small, superficial crack. This blends subtly into the naturally formed patina of the leather.

As with many Omersa animals from this period, the original tail was lost over the years. It has been replaced with an original tail crafted by Omersa. Consequently, the replacement does not exhibit the same aged patina. The difference is visible upon close inspection, but remains subtle in the overall impression.

One ear was reattached in the past to preserve it. The right hind leg is slightly shortened.
