The basket combines several different weaving patterns, giving the otherwise humble agricultural form a surprisingly graphic quality.

The green-dyed splints are what set this example apart. Visible primarily from within the basket, their wonderfully muted color feels entirely at home in an English country kitchen, garden room, mudroom, or collected country-house interior. Its generous bowl-shaped form is equally handsome left empty or casually filled with garden clippings, dried hydrangeas, linens, or other lightweight decorative objects.

The basket retains the irregularities and subtle variations expected of an old handwoven piece, while presenting exceptionally well. It is the sort of utilitarian antique that brings texture and history to a room without feeling overly decorative.
