Created in 1977, this compact globular vessel features an intricate pulled-feather or combed pattern in layers of cream, caramel, tobacco brown and smoky umber, worked beneath clear glass. The repeated scalloped decoration wraps continuously around the body, becoming tighter as it rises toward the short cylindrical neck.

The small scale gives the piece an almost jewel-like quality. At just 5 inches high, the vase has substantial visual depth created by the clear outer glass and densely worked interior decoration.

Sweet established Karuna Glass in the 1970s and became part of the generation of American artists who helped develop studio glass as an independent craft and art form. This 1977 example dates to the early period of his career and predates much of the later millefiori and paperweight work for which he is now frequently encountered.
Signed and dated on underside.
