A wonderfully exuberant antique Chinese porcelain ginger jar made for the Straits Chinese / Peranakan market, dating to approximately c. 1890–1920.
The rounded jar is richly hand decorated in polychrome enamels over a turquoise ground, with large Double Happiness (囍) medallions framed by scrolling green forms and surrounded by peonies, flowering vines and auspicious botanical motifs. A deep emerald-green shoulder band with black scrolling decoration provides a dramatic contrast, while a yellow lappet border encircles the base.
The Double Happiness character, or shuangxi, is traditionally associated with marriage, making vessels of this type particularly connected with weddings and celebrations of marital harmony. The vivid combination of turquoise, pink, green and yellow is strongly associated with Straits Chinese / Peranakan porcelain, made in China for Chinese communities in Southeast Asia including Singapore, Penang and Malacca.
The porcelain body displays the appealing irregularities of hand production: variations in the enamel application, kiln speckling, small firing inclusions and visible concentric potting marks on the underside. The broad exposed foot and substantial body further contribute to its period character.
Originally made as a covered jar, the porcelain cover is no longer present. The vessel remains highly decorative as shown and works beautifully displayed alone or used as an open decorative jar or vase.
An unusually lively example, particularly appealing for its turquoise ground, generous scale and wonderfully saturated palette.
