Exceptional Art Deco molded glass vase depicting a deeply sculpted forest scene, closely corresponding to the celebrated Barolac “Dans La Forêt” (“In the Forest”) design associated with Josef Inwald of Czechoslovakia (present-day Czechia), circa 1930s.
This impressive vase features a dramatic woodland scene rendered in high relief, with large gnarled tree trunks, branching limbs, exposed roots and densely textured foliage wrapping around the vessel. The combination of frosted and clearer areas of the glass creates remarkable depth and dimension as light passes across the molded forest landscape.
The form is closely comparable to the documented Barolac “Dans La Forêt,” pattern No. 586, a well-known Art Deco forest design associated with the Josef Inwald glassworks. A documented example of the same design measures 10" high × 7¾" in diameter and weighs 8 lbs. 7 oz.; it is specifically described as an unsigned, well-documented form. Rariora Gallery
This example is unmarked. Its attribution is based on comparison with documented Barolac examples, including the distinctive forest composition, proportions, molded relief and substantial construction. The design itself dates to the 1930s, although Barolac molds were used in later production, so the exact production date of this unmarked example cannot be definitively established from the vase alone. Chairish
Of particular interest, a January 1990 appraisal described the vase as clear frosted glass with a molded tree-trunk forest scene and tentatively attributed it to Consolidated Glass Co. Subsequent comparison with documented Barolac examples indicates a much closer correspondence to the Josef Inwald “Dans La Forêt” form.
