A wonderfully weathered late 19th-century Chinese provincial wine or storage jar, likely dating to the late Qing dynasty, circa 1880–1910. The heavily potted vessel has a rounded ovoid body, twin loop handles and a distinctive turquoise-blue crackle glaze with extensive surface variation developed through age and use.
The neck is encircled by an old hand-worked metal collar with shaped reinforcing tabs, apparently added as a functional repair or reinforcement during the vessel’s working life more than a century ago. The mottled, worn metal surface adds to the jar’s strong utilitarian and folk-art character.
The form and glaze relate closely to northern Chinese storage and wine vessels of the late 19th century. Shanxi Province is a possible origin, though the attribution remains broader in the absence of a definitive kiln or maker identification.
A highly sculptural antique vessel with exceptional surface, age and presence.
