Framed 23.5 × 27.5 × 1 in.

A striking signed lithograph by Romanian-Israeli artist Sandu Liberman depicting an intimate Shabbat candle-lighting scene. A contemplative woman appears beside two glowing Sabbath candles, rendered in Liberman’s expressive figurative style and a warm palette of gold, ochre, rust, burgundy and green.

Titled Shabbas Candles VIII B and dating to circa 1970, the composition brings together two subjects central to Liberman’s work: portraiture and Jewish devotional life. The quiet expression of the figure, her covered head and the illuminated candles create a deeply human image of faith, reflection and domestic ritual.

The work is pencil signed “Sandu Liberman” at the lower right. Additional pencil notation is visible at the lower left but is partially concealed beneath the mat; the edition designation has therefore not been confirmed.

About the Artist

Sandu Liberman (1923–1977) was born in Iași, Romania, and developed an international career as a portraitist and figurative artist. Following World War II, he exhibited extensively in Bucharest and in 1952 was awarded a gold medal at Romania’s International Art Festival. During this period he was also commissioned to illustrate a major Romanian encyclopedia and was appointed an official portrait artist in Romania.

Liberman settled in Israel in 1962, where he continued his portrait work and received portrait commissions from the Israeli government. His artistic output encompassed portraits, figures, dancers and family scenes, but he became particularly associated with emotionally expressive images of Jewish life and devotion.

Shabbas Candles VIII B belongs to this especially recognizable aspect of Liberman’s work. Rather than treating religious ritual as a distant historical subject, Liberman places the viewer close to a private moment of contemplation. The combination of portraiture, Jewish tradition and expressive color gives the image both cultural significance and an immediate decorative presence.

The lithograph is presented under glass with a warm mat in a substantial vintage giltwood frame with a wide molded profile and decorative foliate detailing. The aged gold finish beautifully complements the amber and ochre tones of the composition and makes this a particularly handsome, ready-to-hang example.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. The gilt frame shows surface rubbing, spotting, finish variation and minor areas of wear consistent with age. The lithograph presents well under glass. Please review all photographs closely for condition and details.
