This exceptional example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving embodies the restrained elegance characteristic of the Peking style. The design utilizes a deeply saturated indigo field, providing a dramatic contrast to the sparse yet impactful decorative elements. This piece is a testament to the enduring appeal of antique rugs from the Republican period.

The composition centers on a finely rendered circular medallion, filled with stylized peonies and foliage in soft beige and pale gold tones. Complementing the central motif are delicate, scattered floral sprays placed symmetrically across the rich primary color. The masterful use of deep navy establishes this as a prime example among blue color rugs, where the subtle interplay of light and dark hues defines the overall mood.

A wide, creamy ivory border frames the composition, offering a luminous counterpoint to the dark field. This border features an intricate, scrolling vine pattern interspersed with blossoms in various shades of blue and charcoal. The corners are gracefully spandrelled, echoing the floral motifs of the main field and lending a sense of architectural balance to the overall structure.

Woven during a period of significant artistic transition in China, this rug maintains the classical balance while incorporating Western-influenced open space. Its substantial dimensions make it suitable for grand interiors, placing it firmly within the category of room size rugs. This piece is a sophisticated and highly versatile decorative anchor, offering both historical depth and timeless beauty. See less
