Dramatic mid-century Italian original oil painting on canvas, signed A. Reyes at the lower right and presented in an elaborate period gilt frame.
This impressive large-scale seascape captures a turbulent ocean with rolling emerald-green and turquoise waves breaking into brilliant white foam beneath an atmospheric sky. The artist used energetic, highly visible brushwork and areas of textured impasto to give the water exceptional movement and depth.
The reverse retains an important original paper label reading “Product of Reliable, Newark, N.J. — Imported Original Oil Painting,” along with inventory number 4208. Most notably, the reverse also retains a partial vintage Macy’s paper label, providing compelling evidence that the painting was retailed through Macy’s department store. Reliable of Newark is documented as a mid-century importer/distributor of European decorative oil paintings, including works sold through Macy’s during the 1950s and 1960s.
The painting is housed in a substantial ornate gilt composition frame with deeply molded scrolling foliate and acanthus decoration. Its beautifully aged cream-and-gold finish gives the work an authentic Old World character and makes the painting especially effective as a statement piece.
A wonderful example of 1950s–1960s Italian decorative painting, combining a desirable coastal subject, large scale, original oil medium, period frame and unusually well-preserved retail/import provenance.

The oil painting presents attractively with visible texture and brushwork. The ornate period frame retains an appealing aged surface with areas of cracking, finish loss and losses to the molded decoration, particularly around the corners. The original reverse paper covering and labels show considerable age and tearing. Please refer closely to photographs. I would leave the frame in its present condition rather than over-restoring it. less
