Mezzotint is notoriously one of the most physically demanding and time-consuming printmaking techniques. The artist must first roughen a copper plate with a "rocker" to produce a rich, velvety black, then painstakingly scrape and burnish away areas to create lighter tones. Rothe was considered a modern master of this technique. Her ability to achieve fluid, dynamic motion (like dancers) using a medium that inherently fights against fluidity is a major component of her historical value. She was also pioneer in creating the illusion of transparency in the Mezzotint process.

The piece is signed "G.H Rothe" in the lower right margin and titled "Dance" at lower center. It comes with a certificate of authenticity from Park West Galleries signed by Founder & CEO Albert Scaglione. It is presented double matted under glass in a vintage silver-toned metal frame.

About the Artist

Rothe's celebrated career focused on intricately detailed mezzotints of surreal landscapes, graceful dancers, and horses rendered with anatomical precision. Born in Beuthen, Germany, her training in art history, human anatomy, goldsmithing, and drawing led to her mastery of the mezzotint technique. Each print in her large editions was unique, and she produced over 30,000 works during her lifetime—a testament to her prolific output and lasting influence.
