A striking French Art Nouveau pyrographed and hand-painted wood panel by decorative painter Abel Trinocq, signed and dated 1903 at lower right.
The vertical composition depicts a loose spray of poppies rendered through a combination of finely burned pyrography linework and translucent painted color. Deep scarlet, orange and russet blossoms emerge against the warm natural wood ground, with the pyrographed stems and serrated foliage giving the work its distinctive graphic quality.
Trinocq was an established French decorative painter associated with significant late 19th-century public commissions. He participated in the interior decoration of the Hôtel de Ville de Limoges, where French heritage records identify him among the painters responsible for ceilings in the principal rooms. He is also documented as having worked on the painted ceiling of the Théâtre de la Coupe d’Or in Rochefort in 1884.
Created in 1903, this panel sits beautifully within the period’s fascination with botanical forms, hand craftsmanship and the integration of fine and decorative arts. The poppy motif, sinuous drawing and warm wood surface make it especially evocative of French Art Nouveau interiors. Executed on a likely repurposed wooden panel.
Signed Trinocq and dated 1903 lower right.
Acquired at auction at Hôtel Drouot, Paris.
