A pair of Chinese provincial elm benches with a beautifully weathered, silvered surface built up over long years of use. Each thick plank seat rests on splayed legs joined by stretchers, with carved spandrel brackets beneath the seat and traditional mortise and tenon joinery throughout. The two have mellowed slightly differently, one warmer and darker, the other paler, which only adds to their character.
Benches like these were everyday furniture in rural Chinese homes and courtyards, made in the early 20th century.
I chose them for their honest construction and time worn surfaces. At 55 inches long and just 5 inches deep at the top, they are slim enough for the foot of a bed, an entry or hallway wall, or either side of a farmhouse table. They also make handsome low ledges for books, plants and objects.
Each approx. 20.25 in. H x 55 in. W x 11.25 in. D at the legs; seat top 5 in. D.
