The column is built from a stack of softly swelling organic forms in polished chrome, rising from a broad rounded base. Each segment is slightly irregular, as though shaped by hand, so light ripples along the full height of the lamp. Even unlit, it reads as sculpture.

Michael Aram, the New York born designer who built his studio among the metalworking traditions of India, is known for pairing a modern, nature inspired eye with handcraft. This lamp shows that approach at its best: fluid and biomorphic, yet disciplined in its vertical line.

I chose it because it works as hard as a piece of art. Set it beside a sofa, a reading chair or at the corner of a bedroom, and it holds its own in a contemporary, minimal or collected room.
