Peter Keil's floral still life, an original unframed oil painting on canvas depicting two highly stylized flowers arranged in a turquoise vase on a vivid orange shelf. Signed “P. Keil” at the lower right.

The composition features two generalized, zinnia- or daisy-like blossoms rather than botanically precise flowers. One is painted in golden yellow and deep red; the other combines coral, scarlet, and crimson. Broad emerald-green leaves surround the turquoise and aqua vase, which is accented with red brushwork. A warm cream and pale-yellow ground allows the saturated colors and heavy black contours to remain visually dominant.

Keil constructed the image using rapid, direct brushwork, flattened perspective, and broad passages of largely unmixed color. The assertive black outlines unify the flowers, leaves, vessel, and shelf while allowing traces of the artist’s brush and variations in paint density to remain visible. These features are characteristic of Keil’s spontaneous Expressionist technique.

The simplified forms and emphatic contouring reflect the influence of Pablo Picasso, particularly his reduction of familiar subjects into strongly outlined, graphic shapes. The high-keyed palette, compressed space, and decorative treatment of foliage also recall Henri Matisse and the Fauvist use of color as an independent expressive element. These references are influences rather than an attempt to reproduce either artist’s style.

Unframed and painted around the canvas edges, the work may be displayed as shown or placed in a frame.
