A richly ornamented French cast-iron ashtray dating to circa 1960, designed with a central acanthus flower head surrounded by scrolling foliage, flowering vines, and stylized birds. The deeply modeled decoration draws upon the classical acanthus ornament used throughout French decorative arts, while the birds and continuous vine suggest nature, abundance, and renewal.

The broad circular border is interrupted by three evenly spaced, smoothly finished cigarette rests, providing a restrained contrast to the densely worked relief. Small birds appear among the undulating leaves and blossoms around the perimeter, giving movement to the otherwise symmetrical composition. The recessed central well repeats the foliate design on a smaller scale, centered by a raised flower resembling a stylized rose.

Cast as a substantial single piece, the ashtray was finished through chasing, texturing, and selective polishing. The raised surfaces retain a warm golden tone, while darker coloration within the recesses provides definition and emphasizes the intricacy of the casting. A protective felt pad has been applied beneath the central well.

Beyond its original function, the piece may be used as a vide-poche, jewelry tray, or decorative table object. Its combination of classical ornament and practical design is characteristic of French decorative bronze production during the mid-20th century.

Presents beautifully with minor wear consistent with age and use.
