1960s Alfred Dunhill English Silver-Plated Service Ashtray and Cigar Tray
Constructed in two pieces, the lift silver-palmed top and the conforming carved hardwood base
A handsome English modernist two-part service ashtray and cigar tray by Alfred Dunhill, dating to the mid-20th century, circa 1960s–1970s. The substantial silver-plated upper section is fitted over a richly toned carved hardwood base, combining practical construction with the restrained luxury associated with Dunhill smoking accessories.
The circular ash well is surrounded by three smaller rests suitable for cigarettes or slender cigars. An elongated central channel provides a generous resting place for a full-size cigar while directing falling ash toward the basin. Its multipurpose arrangement would have been appropriate for a private club, hotel suite, executive office, bar, or drawing room, although no specific hotel provenance is known.
The silver-plated component lifts completely away, revealing the conforming carved and recessed wooden base beneath. This removable construction facilitates cleaning, stabilizes the metal tray, protects furniture from heat, and prevents the ashtray from scratching or sliding across a tabletop.
The upper section was likely cast or formed from a substantial base-metal alloy, machined and polished, and then electroplated with silver. Satin-finished planes contrast with the polished ash well, cigar channel, and molded edges. The fitted hardwood base was carved and routed to receive the metal component, then stained and finished by hand.
The underside retains the gold-stamped "Dunhill / Made in England” mark. Presented in two original components.
