Alejandro Aróstegui “Cráter Chatarra” Mixed-Media Still Life, 1979
A monumental mixed-media still life on wood by important Nicaraguan modernist Alejandro Aróstegui, titled Cráter Chatarra, or Scrap-Metal Crater. Signed and dated “A. Aróstegui 79” at the upper left, the work retains its original Galería Tagüe label from Managua, Nicaragua.
Aróstegui isolates a single piece of crushed industrial refuse against a nearly black, atmospheric background. The central object remains deliberately ambiguous: it resembles a flattened metal container or commercial satchel, while its broad central seam and divided lower sections also suggest a pair of empty breeches or trousers. Its buckled upper edge folds inward to form the dark concavity identified in the title as a crater.
Red striping and the partial black letter “P” survive across the distressed surface, indicating that the source material—or the object represented—may once have been part of a painted sign, branded sack, industrial container, or piece of commercial packaging. Enlarged to an imposing scale and removed from its original purpose, the discarded object assumes the presence of an archaeological fragment or anonymous human surrogate.
The Spanish word "chatarra" refers to scrap metal, mechanical debris, or discarded material. Aróstegui’s title is simultaneously descriptive and metaphorical. The “crater” is the physical depression within the collapsed object, but it also suggests impact, damage, and absence. When interpreted as clothing, the empty form evokes a missing body; when read as a container, it becomes a depleted industrial shell.
Created during the political upheaval of 1979, the work permits associations with destruction, scarcity, and social displacement, although these remain interpretive rather than a documented statement of the artist’s intention.
Born in Bluefields in 1935, Aróstegui co-founded the influential Praxis group and became a central figure in Nicaraguan modernism. His work frequently combines painting, collage, pronounced textures, and nontraditional materials, including imagery derived from crushed cans and industrial debris.
Aróstegui is represented in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., which owns his 1968 mixed-media painting Beast, and the Art Museum of the Americas, Organization of American States, whose collection includes El Banquete (The Feast) from 1966. His work is also included in the permanent collection of Fondo del Sol in Washington. (National Gallery of Art, Art Museum of the Americas collection exhibition)
