Italian Neoclassical Lapis-Blue Enameled Giltwood Mirror, 1960s
Italian Neoclassical lapis-blue enameled and giltwood wall mirror, dating to the 1960s. The architectural frame combines a richly colored blue enamel finish with carved and gilded classical ornament.
The rectangular mirror plate is enclosed by a molded giltwood border and flanked by columnar supports decorated with carved acanthus leaves. A prominent palmette motif introduces another element derived from ancient Greek and Roman architecture. The alternating lapis-blue and gold surfaces clearly define the individual carvings and emphasize the symmetrical organization of the frame.
Palmettes were widely employed in classical architectural ornament and later became an important feature of Neoclassical furniture and decorative arts. Acanthus leaves, traditionally associated with Corinthian capitals, appear along the side columns and provide a naturalistic counterpoint to the more geometric structure. Together, these motifs give the mirror the appearance of a miniature classical architectural surround.
The deep blue finish resembles the intense color of lapis lazuli but is an enameled decorative surface rather than inset stone. Its combination of blue and gold recalls the strong contrasting palettes found in ancient and Renaissance interiors, interpreted here through the Italian decorative vocabulary of the mid-20th century.
Suitable for placement above a console table, commode, or vanity, or as an architectural accent between windows.
