Its surface has softened through years of handling, with small marks and shifts in tone that give the wood a settled, lived-in character. Below it, three drawers sit behind dark metal pulls, while the shaped apron and slender cabriole legs, ending in pad feet, keep the whole piece looking light. Lowboys like this were made in England in the 1700s as dressing and side tables.

At 41.5 inches wide and 25.5 inches high, this antique English lowboy has the proportions that make old furniture easy to live with now. It holds a lamp, a stack of books or the things that gather near an entry, and it works as a generous side table beside a sofa or under a window, with useful storage and none of the scale of a full console. A broad, plain oak top over graceful legs and a shaped apron: practical furniture with just enough flourish.
