Turquoise is the first thing you see, and the carving holds your eye after that. This antique teak capital is heavily carved with acanthus leaves and rolled scrolls, finished in worn turquoise paint that has softened and chipped over time to show the aged wood beneath. A beaded rim circles a round recess in the top, a ready seat for a pillar candle.
At 13 inches square and 10 inches tall, it has the weight and presence of a true architectural piece. Place a pillar candle in the recess and set it on a console, mantel or hearth. Use it as a pedestal for a sculpture or a bowl, or as a sculptural riser in an entry. One face is plain, unfinished teak, so it sits flush against a wall while the carved sides face the room. Because it is teak, it also suits a covered porch or patio, where the paint will keep weathering.
