A spike at the center tells you what it was for. This antique teak plinth is built in low, stepped tiers, square at the foot and rising to a shallow round dish in the top, with a small metal spike standing at its center, a pricket for a candle. The dark brown paint has worn thin over time, with flecks of cream and green showing through, and a fine band of incised detail runs around the lowest tier.
At 10.5 inches square and 5.5 inches tall, it sits low and steady on a coffee table, a windowsill, a shelf or the floor. Press a pillar candle onto the spike and the candle stays centered in its dish. Use it as a candle stand, a riser for a small arrangement or a foot for a group of taller objects, or set a tray on top for a low serving surface. The weathered finish suits rustic, coastal and collected rooms, and because it is teak it also suits a covered porch or patio, where the paint will keep weathering.
