This exceptional square piece exemplifies the unique cross-cultural weaving traditions of the late Qing Dynasty period. Its small scatter size and balanced square format make it ideal for intimate spaces or as a striking wall hanging, showcasing the high-quality, hand-spun wool typical of this era.

The central field is dominated by a highly stylized Snow Lion, rendered in shades of cream and olive green against a deep, saturated madder red ground. The intentional use of the red color rugs in the background and detailing highlights the rug's prestige and connection to Tibetan Buddhist iconography, where the lion symbolizes protection and power.

Unlike the more fluid designs of contemporary Chinese court carpets, this Tibetan square piece utilizes bold, angular outlines and a structured composition. Even the mythical creature is rendered with a strong, graphic quality, emphasizing the underlying geometric patterns that define the border and frame the central medallion.

This rare artifact offers a compelling glimpse into 19th-century Himalayan textile art. Its excellent preservation and powerful visual presence make it a highly desirable addition to any collection of fine antique rugs, representing a distinct and historically significant square weaving lineage.
