Sprigs of dark green leaves march around the frame in pairs, each tipped with little clusters of yellow berries, painted with a sweet, unpracticed hand that no factory could copy.

The glass has a generous beveled edge, crisply cut, that throws little prisms of rainbow light across the glass when the sun hits it. The frame is gently and charmingly irregular, with a soft, rounded profile. The rustic wooden backing, with its old nails and wire for hanging, shows the honest age of the piece. Hang it in an entry, a cottage bedroom, or a powder room, where the painted frame can be the star.

Recently found at a Vermont country house sale.

Condition: lovingly used. The painted frame shows soft wear and age, and the wooden backing has natural splits and old nail holes consistent with its age. The beveled glass is in good vintage condition with a clean, sharp bevel.
