Modeled seated with one paw raised against a rocky support, the lion has a particularly handsome profile, with a deeply articulated mane, broad paws, and the slightly stylized expression associated with traditional European garden ornament.

The weathered surface is a large part of its appeal. Pale mineral deposits, subtle traces of mossy green, and variations in the terracotta finish give the piece the appearance of having occupied a garden for years rather than having just arrived from a showroom. At 25 inches high, it has enough scale to hold its own architecturally without becoming cumbersome.

A natural choice beside a garden gate, on a gravel terrace, at the entrance to a conservatory, or nestled among clipped boxwood and climbing roses. I could also see it brought indoors in a garden room or entry hall, where the aged surface would provide a beautiful counterpoint to polished furniture and textiles.
