Auctioned at Hampel on April 2, 2020 (Lot 371) A view into the interior of a room or shop where an elderly woman and a boy stand behind a wooden counter. Various game birds are displayed on the table, while more poultry hangs from a long pole in the background. The elderly woman—wearing a red garment, a white collar, and a dark bodice—holds up a dead duck in her left hand and points to it with her right; her dark eyes gaze out at the viewer, and her brow is slightly furrowed. Beside her stands a boy in brown clothing and headgear; he holds a glass of wine in his right hand and points with his left toward a platter on the table, which also holds two keys, a loaf of bread, cheese, and a brightly painted milk jug. In the background, at the top left, is a wooden rack with four nails; hanging from them are a large piece of red-and-white meat and, on another nail, two long, small brown brushes. The painting is executed in a predominantly beige-brown palette, featuring pronounced chiaroscuro effects; the woman's red clothing and the large piece of meat are particularly striking. Minor retouching. Notes: The small white milk jug and a similar depiction of a boy also appear in a painting by the artist titled *Pícaro de cocina*, held at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. See less
