The sculptural bird is beautifully modeled in a dramatic downward pose, perched atop a pale tree-form base with detailed feet, wings and feathering.
Hand-painted Majolica piece in a rich black, orange and golden yellow with a striking red eye, the coloring gives this piece an unexpectedly moody quality — almost a sophisticated Halloween bird without being overtly seasonal. It would be especially fun worked into an autumn mantel or Halloween vignette, but is equally handsome displayed year-round among books, botanical pieces or other Italian ceramics.

The combination of the elongated wings, vivid coloration and expressive pose gives the figurine considerable presence. A distinctive vintage decorative piece from Chelsea House's Italian-made Port Royal line.
