This is an exceptional late 19th to early 20th-century Tramp Art jewelry or keepsake box, meticulously handcrafted using elaborate, multi-layered chip-carving techniques. C. 1880-1920
Stepped geometric formations rise across the lid and sides, their hand-notched edges creating a striking interplay of light and shadow. Warm reddish-brown wood tones complement floral metal rosettes, star-shaped studs, and a decorative swing handle.
Velvet panels soften the exterior, including a faded ochre-toned panel surrounding the ornate white-metal keyhole escutcheon. The hinged lid reveals a red velvet-lined interior, with four five-pointed metal stars arranged around a central floral rosette inside the lid. Four small ball feet elevate the box.
The underside bears the artist’s signature, apparently reading “MULDNA,” alongside surviving cigar-box packaging remnants that reflect the resourceful construction associated with Tramp Art.
A distinctive signed example of late-19th- to early-20th-century folk craftsmanship, offering sculptural presence and richly textured detail.
