Sculptural and unusual, this elegant vessel is a 19th-century water jug made from constrained gourd with a rich patina. While the young fruit was still growing on the vine, artisans used cord to shape the gourd as a chrysanthemum blossom, a motif for longevity and endurance.
Water vessels of dried gourd are associated with health and protection, as a double gourd flask of medicine is an accessory of Shoulao, the God of Longevity.
