Each lion is seated upright in a powerful, commanding posture. The pair is classically posed: the male lion (on the right) rests his paw on an openwork, geometric brocade ball, symbolizing dominion over the world, while the female lion (on the left) playfully tends to a cub, representing the nurturing of future generations. Both figures feature boldly contrasting elements: the manes, tails, spine ridges, tassels, and facial fur details are rendered in a vibrant, textured cinnabar red, while the bodies, faces, and paws are finished with an aged, mottled gold gilding over a dark bronze base. Each lion wears an elaborate decorative collar with hanging bells. The maker notes these are auspicious Chinese beasts meant to protect the home and attract wealth, with a commanding presence and a substantial, heavy feel. A truly impressive and highly decorative pair.
