Monumental equestrian oil on canvas depicting an elegant horse-drawn carriage traveling through a deeply atmospheric wooded landscape. Signed “S. Duncan” in red at the lower left and presented in an exceptionally substantial, richly ornamented gilt and antiqued frame.
The composition is beautifully scaled, with a team of dark horses emerging from the shadowed woodland path while a formally dressed gentleman and woman ride above in the carriage. The artist uses layered greens, deep browns, black, muted earth tones and carefully placed highlights to create remarkable depth through the forest.
Close examination reveals particularly attractive painted details throughout the horses' harnesses, carriage fittings, wheels, clothing and foliage.
The painting is attributed to American artist and illustrator Scott Duncan (1944–2017). Duncan studied at Pratt Institute, served as a U.S. Army illustrator and later worked professionally as a freelance illustrator, with work appearing in major American publications including Time Magazine, Good Housekeeping and Family Circle.
Documented auction records for Scott Duncan include oils signed simply “S. Duncan,” as this work is signed, as well as equestrian and sporting subjects. Works attributed to Duncan also demonstrate his use of substantial canvases and traditional framed presentations.
The impressive frame is an important decorative element in its own right. Multiple molded bands surround the canvas, including scrolling foliate ornament, contrasting dark textured passages, raised decorative borders and warm gilt/bronze-toned finishes. Its substantial proportions give the work the presence of a true statement painting.
At approximately 47 inches wide, the piece has exceptional visual impact and would be particularly effective over a large console, fireplace, library wall, study, entry hall or living room. The equestrian subject and rich palette lend themselves especially well to traditional, English country, Ralph Lauren-inspired, equestrian and collected interiors.
