A striking collection of five vintage seashell prints by Texas artist and designer Carolyn T. Young, presented with their original Carolyn Young portfolio.
Each print features a meticulously rendered shell specimen in black ink against warm ivory paper, accompanied by its common and scientific name and Young’s distinctive “CY” monogram. Each is additionally signed Carolyn T. Young in pencil.
The series includes the Emperor Slit Shell (Pleurotomaria hirasei), Chambered Nautilus (Nautilus pompilius), Nutmeg Shell (Distorsio clathrata), Distaff Spindle (Fusinus colus), and Violet Spider Conch (Lambis violacea). The spare compositions, scientific nomenclature and finely rendered linework give the collection the character of traditional natural-history illustration with a distinctly modern graphic quality.
The prints are accompanied by their original brown presentation portfolio, prominently marked “ORIGINAL PRINTS by Carolyn Young.” A mounted shell illustration remains intact within the portfolio. The survival of the original presentation material makes this an especially appealing and cohesive collection.
Carolyn T. Young was associated with a Corpus Christi, Texas stationery and design business operating under her name. Other surviving examples from this seashell series have been documented as numbered limited editions of 500, including another example of the Distaff Spindle design. The present prints are pencil signed; no edition numbers are visible.
Offered unframed, allowing the collection to be displayed together or framed individually. Late 20th century, circa 1970s–1980s.
