A wonderfully ornate antique French hinged vanity or trinket box, found at a French market and dating approximately to the early 20th century.
The round box is richly decorated with raised floral garlands, bows and trailing roses around the sides, finished along the upper edge with a delicate repeating border.
The lid is particularly beautiful, embellished with a dimensional French trophy composition of musical instruments and pastoral motifs surrounded by flowers and leafy branches and a little mask. The design has the romantic character of the Louis XVI revival style.
Inside the hinged lid is a small beveled mirror framed by a twisted rope or cable border. The interior of the box has developed a wonderful warm golden patina with age.
No visible hallmark. The exact metal composition is unknown and is therefore described conservatively as silvered or silver-tone metal.
Good antique condition with age appropriate patina, tarnishing, surface wear and oxidation throughout. The interior shows warm discoloration and patina consistent with age and years well used. Please examine photographs closely as they form part of the description.
