A charming, compact Hong Kong camphor chest from around the 1950s. It's deeply carved on all four sides and the lid, with figures in a garden village scene: willows, pagodas, and a moon-gate vignette on each end. The back carries a mountain landscape, which is a nice bonus for a piece that can float in a room. Details include an engraved scalloped brass hasp, cloud-shaped lift handles, and dovetailed corners. It sits on stepped bracket feet with Deco fan carving. Inside, there's a removable slatted tray and the original brass lid stay. At 28" wide, it's an easy size for a coffee table, an end-of-bed trunk, or entry storage.
Open the lid and the camphor scent is still strong, the natural aromatic that made these chests prized for storing linens and woolens.
Condition: good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. There are light chips and finish loss along the lid edge, minor surface scratches, a faint ring mark on one side panel, and small spots on the side rail. Please review all photos.
